It's a lens hood & protects your lens for drops & spills
Broke my first one that came with the 70-200 when the camera and lens decided to jump out of my car onto the parking lot ground. Thank god the first thing to hit the ground was the lens hood. It took all the impact and the lens and camera come out of the jump unharmed. The lens hood on the other hand broke/cracked. This is why I bought a new one. Works great and protects your lens. It's expensive, but hey it protects your lens and glass elements from drops and other mishaps. I also never use filters on my lens so hood also protects the glass.

This is a very nice ...hood for Canon RF 70-200mm F/2.8L but install the right size for Canon EF 100-400mm F/4.5-56 L II I love it !
Saved my lens when I fell off a cliff
I bought this lens hood to replace the identical piece that came with my RF 70-200 2.8 lens. On a recent hike to Wind Cave near Logan UT, I lost my balance when startled by a rattlesnake I almost stepped on, and slipped off the trail. Fortunately, I was able to grab the edge of the trail and a tree branch, and was able to scramble back up. Despite smacking the cliff wall hard, my lens was just fine, as the hood took the brunt of the impact. I was covered in dirt, but the lens remained clean. Unfortunately, the hood didn't survive -- but I am happy to buy another to keep my lens safe in the future.
I love it
I absolutely love this hood, I actually don't have a 70-200 lens but heard it fits the 100-400 and it does. Looks better than the plain old black hood.
